CRISAcare (Drop-In Centre)

CRISAcare is a drop-in centre (DIC) of the Centre for Research and Information on Substance Abuse (CRISA). It was initiated as a Community-based drug abuse treatment project, under the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC) implemented and European Union (EU) funded project, ‘Response to Drugs and Related Organized Crime in Nigeria’.

The DIC provides counselling, psycho-social support and basic healthcare services to problematic drug users and their families to reduce the social, economic and health harms associated with the abuse of psychoactive substances. It also provides sports and recreational facilities for young people. The number of young people abusing both licit and illicit psychoactive drugs is on the increase. The substances commonly abused include cannabis, alcohol, tobacco, cocaine, heroin and prescription medications.

The abuse of psychoactive substances is associated with a range of personal and social harms, including physical and mental health problems, crime, violence and other social vices. There are few facilities providing appropriate and accessible services to the growing population drug users. The DIC was established to meet the need for such services. It operates from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, and from 10am to 1pm on Saturday. Staff of the DIC includes a counsellor/clinical psychologist, social worker, nurse, medical doctor and outreach workers.

Over four hundred male and female drug users and other family members have received services from the DIC since its inception in June 2016. A good number of the beneficiaries have made significant progress in recovery and some have been reunited with their families. The DIC operates in partnership with government agencies, the local community as well as a host of public and private service providers. All persons who have problems related to the use of psychoactive substances and families who have members with such problems are welcome to seek services for their needs.
