Introduction

Mental illness is a multi-factorial problem for it can be organic, drug-induced, psychologically or socially based. The understanding that there are cultural and psycho-social processes that are involved in the problem of mental illness and that the problem may require social and emotional approaches has led to the inclusion of social work and psychological methods of treatment in psychiatric management in institutional psychiatry. Wolberg poses the question of “whether there are differences in the quality of improvement with varied forms of treatment, or do certain kinds of problems respond better to specific types of treatment, or do certain kinds of problems respond better to specific types of treatment methods”. It is indisputable that drug
treatment alone cannot adequately deal with all forms of mental illness, especially the alcohol/drug related cases of mental illness.
